Kalin and Jennifer // Rodeo Beach Engagement

Kalin and Jennifer // Rodeo Beach Engagement

Kalin and I have been friends since middle school. We both played dwarves in a Willits Young Actors Theater production of The Hobbit. During production he dated my friend Amber (who played Bilbo Baggins). In high school we were both active in our school's Peer Counseling program and there were a few memorable Halloween parties in his honor (his birthday being the 1st of November). So there's a bit of history there. We have also maintained relationships with multiple mutual friends and we have stayed in touch over the years.

Favorite Beef Stew Recipe

I have made a few different beef stew recipes over the years, a beef and Guinness stew made in a slow cooker, Julia Child's beef bourguignon, but this is the one that I always come back to. It's the one that makes my mouth water every time I think of it. I love the acidity of the wine and the tomatoes and the richness of the broth and I love how the beef just falls apart. I especially love how easy it is, the main ingredient being patience. It's a great recipe for a cloudy Sunday afternoon. Recipe adapted from here

Serves 4 | Prep time 30 minutes | Cook time 3.5 hours

Ingredients

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 red onion, cut into medium dice

5 stalks celery, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

3 carrots, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

1 pound stew beef

3/4 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 1/2 cups dry red wine (I used an $8 Zinfandel)

4 sprigs fresh rosemary

8 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1 teaspoon dried)

5 cloves garlic, minced

1 28 oz. can diced tomatoes

2 cups boiling water or beef stock

a dozen or so small potatoes, quartered

Directions

Preheat oven to 300°.

In a Dutch oven over moderately high heat, heat oil until hot but not smoking. Add onion, carrot, and celery and sauté, stirring occasionally, until light golden brown, about 10 minutes.

Add beef, generously season with salt and pepper, and sauté, stirring occasionally, until brown, about 5 minutes.

Add wine, rosemary, thyme, and garlic, stir well, and bring to boil.

Add tomatoes, and bring to a boil. Cover and transfer to oven or slow cooker.

Stir every 30 minutes or so, until beef is tender, about 2 hours.

Once beef is tender add stock and potatoes and return to oven until potatoes are done, about 25 minutes. Serve with cornbread. I like Trader Joe's boxed cornbread mix. (Egg noodles would be good too!)

October Sunset from Mount Tam

A couple of weeks ago I went for a run after work. It was a Monday. I was in Piedmont at the top of a hill, up above Oakland and I could see everything. Lake Merritt, downtown Oakland, the port, the Bay Bridge, Treasure Island, Alcatraz, Mount Tam. The fog was pooling over the Golden Gate and had already engulfed San Francisco, only the Sutro Tower was poking up and through. The sun had just dipped below the horizon and the sky was putting on a show. Florescent pink, purple and orange lit up the clouds and were reflected by the bay. The city lights were starting to twinkle, and headlights were snaking a river of light along hwy 24.

I didn't have a camera or I obviously would have taken a picture. I focussed on allowing what I saw to imprint itself in my memory. I stood there and watched the colors change for 10 minutes and felt lucky to be alive just to witness the beauty around me. I couldn't fathom how any person in the presence of such a vision would not stop and think "wow." I decided that the next night I would get somewhere spectacular in time for sunset, I would invite a friend, and I would have my camera with me.

I'm so glad Nicole and Edie could join me.

Hiking Upper Yosemite Falls

I wrote the full story for Exposure and they featured it! Check it out here.

These are a few of my favorite images from the trip, all taken with my new 20mm f/2.8 lens. Head over to Exposure for more.

Nicole and Ross // Married in Elk, CA

Nicole and Ross // Married in Elk, CA

Flash back to January. I remember it was raining in San Francisco (did it even rain at all in January?), and Nicole and I were getting our nails done. We were happy to spend the afternoon being pampered, catching up, and talking wedding. Ross had proposed on Christmas, things were starting to come together, and it was all very exciting. When Nicole asked if I would shoot her "getting ready photos" I was blown away. I knew that by September I would have eight months more experience under my belt and so hopefully I wouldn't let her down.

Wedding Weekend // Congratulations Josh and Katie!

Thanks for the photo, Nick!

It was such a beautiful wedding. I'm going to let the photos speak for themselves. I just want to say that I love these people, and Josh and Katie, I am so happy for you two!

(P.S. Some photos I took of the happy couple when they were newly engaged.)

Art Print Benefit Sale // Fire Relief for Quincy and Kyle

This is Quincy. She is an unbelievably beautiful person and the stepsister of my amazing friend Nicole, who got married last weekend. I had the privilege of photographing them getting ready for the ceremony on Saturday. The atmosphere was very charged. There were a lot of emotions in the room, as there is at any wedding, although tragically both girls were still hurting from the recent loss of their father, Danny.

_MG_0470.jpg

Danny was an incredible man. It’s almost impossible to describe with words the kind of kindness that radiates from someone’s soul, you have to experience it in person. I was lucky enough to do so in April, when Jeffery and I accompanied Nicole and Ross to Danny’s cabin in Lake County. We spent the weekend exploring the beautiful valley, playing with the dogs, and having great meals and conversation around the table. Ross and Nicole were newly engaged and we took some engagement photos with their pup Edie at sunset. I also snapped some photos of Nicole’s mom, Jo Dee, with Danny, the love of her life, and some of Danny with Nicole. Danny had been battling cancer, but in April he looked great. We had three ATVs and he took the six of us (plus the pups!) on a tour of the valley. Somewhere along the way I lost the lens cap to my camera. We kept an eye out for it on the way back but never found it. I later learned that Danny went back and scoured the valley for it, all for an $8 piece of plastic. His heart was just that big.

On Saturday about an hour before the ceremony, Quincy learned that her neighborhood in Redwood Valley was being evacuated due to the threat of wildfire. The home that she shared with her fiancé, Kyle, and his six-year old son, River, was in immediate danger. But they were safe. Quincy shared with me that she knew there was nothing she could do but be present for the next hour. She stayed calm and was supportive of Nicole. She read one of Danny’s beautiful poems during the ceremony, and as the tears fell, their home and six others burned to the ground.

It is unimaginable to me how someone can experience so much loss in such a short amount of time. But they have stayed strong. Despite this devastation, Quincy and Kyle are planning their life together with a wedding set for next year. Luckily, at the time of the fire, Kyle was already wearing Danny’s ring.

The only way I know to help fundraise is to sell photographs. I am holding an Art Print Benefit Sale. All profits from photo prints purchased from my print shop through the end of the year will go directly to relief efforts for Quincy, Kyle, and River. The photos are really high quality and make beautiful gifts. To donate to Quincy and Kyle directly, you can send paypal donations to wrongsville@gmail.com or you can go to their donation page

Please help Quincy and Kyle reach their relief goals.

Emma, Liz, & Andy // Family Session // Tilden Park

Emma is at such a fun age. She is so tuned into all the little details and it was really fun getting down at her level and experiencing the magic of the botanical garden through her eyes and fingertips. What a sweet family.

If you are interested in scheduling a family session I am currently booking for fall!
