Hike to Penner Lake

Thanks for the photo, Katie!

We went hiking in the Tahoe National Forest last Saturday, and it was nice starting off without a destination. All it took was the suggestion of a couple passing us on the trail to motivate us to keep going. Penner was gorgeous, definitely worth the 90 minutes it took to get there. After four hours in nature with friends my head was more clear than it's been in a long time. It was beautiful out, perfect temperature and clear skies. I am so grateful for this vast and varied California landscape that I get to call home.

progress

There are so many projects on our to-do list, it can be challenging prioritising where to focus our energy and resources. Earlier this week we started designing our kitchen renovation, and this morning we planted garlic and divided irises, irises that have likely been neglected for a couple decades. I took these photos a few days ago when Jeffery was in the middle of taking down an old, rotten, fence to open up our garden. It already looks different than it did then. He's also planning a new fence, creating a walkway, and preparing to plant more shrubs and a cover crop before the rain comes. We're almost ready to prime and paint our newly drywalled living room and then it will be time to buy and install crown molding and refinish the hardwood floors.

We can't do everything at once, but we can do a little every day, and come spring we will have made a lot of progress.

boudoir with Jessica

From Jessica: "Stripping down to your underwear in front of another person can be daunting. Add in a camera and your own insecurities and it becomes downright frightening. Yet nothing could have been further from my experience with Roseann during our boudoir photo session. Roseann is a true professional, making certain from the moment I arrived I was comfortable. The setting for our shoot was pristinely arranged, private, warm and inviting. Together we shot three lingerie/kimono looks. After a few poses allowing me to warm up, we jumped right in. During the shoot Roseann offered encouragement and compliments as well as direction. Periodically she suggested subtle movements of the face, hands and feet that brought forth my best angles and curves to create a beautiful image. At her guidance, I repositioned myself into poses that were comfortable, natural, and kept the photos from appearing stiff or contrived. I felt I could be myself while her guidance and camerawork brought out my best self. The end result was a stunning set of photos showing sides of myself I didn't know existed. Strong, sensual, romantic and sweet, each photo captured a different part of my persona. The photo shoot was fun, sassy, professional and left me feeling absolutely gorgeous."

I love shooting boudoir. It's a fun and exhilarating collaboration. It's like this incredible gift I get to deliver to my client, and unwrapping it makes her feel confident and sexy. Our bodies are amazing and capable of so much, they should be celebrated. I've been on the other side of the camera as well, and it made me appreciate my body in a whole new way. You may think you're doing it for your partner, but really it's for you. And ten years down the line you'll be glad you did.

our home

We had seven of our favorite people over for carnitas last night, and more of our favorite people are scheduled to come, and I can't wait to share our home with them. A home is such a wonderful thing to be able to share with people. A space to gather, to eat, to rest. I feel so lucky and at the same time so sad for all of the Californians who have recently lost their homes. I would be devastated and we have only known ours for a short time. But I already love it. Mostly I love the light. And I am excited to capture how it dances off the people I love.

little one and her pooch

I started watching this little one three days a week, and today I brought my camera with me to capture her in the yummy early light. We are nearing my favorite time of year, when the sky turns the color of apricots at dawn and dusk. I am endlessly grateful to be living in such a beautiful place and that we get to share it with our friends. I can't wait to photograph more beautiful babies this fall. October is family portrait month, and I will have mini session dates available in Nevada County and the East Bay. If you want to stay informed consider joining my mailing list or "liking" my facebook page.

A Self Portrait

A self portrait, because it's been a while, and I don't want to lose myself in memories of this place. Nine days until we move into our home, and as much as I hate so many things about this apartment, I am beyond grateful for it. How much it allowed us to save in such a short amount of time, three and a half years of our noses to the grindstone while redefining ourselves a few times over. I taught myself how to be an entrepreneur in this apartment, I went back to school to study photography, and while living here I became a nanny, and a swimmer, and a homeowner. I turned 25, 26, and 27, which feel like the most defining ages so far. I remember the excitement of coming home with a new lens for the first time, it felt like Christmas, only better. And bringing our kitten home, who drove us absolutely crazy for the first two and a half years and now is the sweetest thing I can imagine, he surprises me with his sweetness every day. This is the only home he has ever known, and I can't wait to show him what else is out there (besides the landing at the top of the stairs and the contents of our fridge). The landscape of our lives is about to change drastically. This limbo period is strange, being physically in Oakland, but already dreaming about life in the mountains. In our garden. In our home. It finally feels like we're living our life, the one we have built for ourselves with the choices we have made, and it feels good.
