Photo Date with Ramsay

My friend Katie is a nanny to a little boy named Ramsay. She has been watching him since he was three months old, and he turns two this June. But, his family is moving to Boston in May, so she asked me to take some photos of the two of them together before he leaves.

The storm clouds held long enough for us to venture to the park and back. And Ramsay was terrific. He is such a ham, and he is such a happy little guy that it was almost too easy. Thank you Katie and Ramsay for letting me spend the morning with you!

Mission Pie

I recently discovered

Mission Pie

out at 25th Street, and I am smitten. I was able to speak to Krystin, one of the co-owners, and she gave me a little insight into the business.

I asked her, "why pie?"

She told me about their desire to sell food that incorporated sustainable ingredients. They wanted to create something that was approachable and affordable. And pie is a great vehicle for that. On the “heart side” of it, pie makes people happy and it’s great for sharing. And they wanted to create a pleasant atmosphere for people to gather.

They did just that.

I was there on a Tuesday afternoon, and the place was packed with people enjoying coffee and pie and salads and reading and talking with one another and working on their computers. The shop has high ceilings, lots of light, and large tables. It is a neighborhood gathering place, and it just so happens to be a business that cares deeply about the health and well-being of its community. What an inspiration! (You can read more about the values of Mission Pie on their

website

I tried the pear raspberry, and it was delicious.

Legion of Honor: William Morris

My soccer game was rained out on Saturday, so Marina and I ventured to the Legion of Honor Museum to see the Victorian Avant-Garde exhibition, "Cult of Beauty." Of the pieces in the collection, William Morris' wallpaper and textile designs resonated with me the most. Here are a few of my favorites:

Many of Morris' textiles were originally created as upholstery fabric or tapestries. The designs were later redrawn on a smaller scale to make suitable for dress making. The fabrics were popularized by Liberty of London decades after Morris' death and remain in production to this day. He was incredibly prolific, and his work is timeless.

The museum cafe was packed, so we decided to go to our favorite spot, Thorough Bread, for some pick-me-ups.

Tea and French pastries make me ridiculously happy. I had the last sweet potato and sage turnover and Marina had gougères (which she attempted to make from memory as an appetizer for her birthday party, and they didn't turn out as wonderful as she had hoped). I found this recipe and we're both going to give it a try. In other news, Jeffery and I are recently hooked on watching The Walking Dead. I am not typically into gore or anything too scary, but it's really well done. So I recommend giving it a try.

First Day of Spring

daffodils and bernal heights

I spent the afternoon in the outer Mission (new local business feature coming soon!), and I was feeling adventurous, so I decided to walk to the top of that blurry hill (Bernal Heights Park).

Walking up hills has a way of clearing my head. Good thing San Francisco has a lot of them. As usual, the view was worth the climb.

After our little photo shoot, we popped some bubbly and got to spend some time enjoying the sunshine with our friends. All the work was done and the party was getting started. It was so much fun being in the moment and getting the chance to celebrate with the people who helped make it all come together.

49ers win!

And then the 49ers beat the Saints in the second round of the playoffs and we could go ahead and get married. We didn't think things could get much better.

We chose to break tradition and do a "first look" photo shoot before the ceremony, which so much fun. Our ceremony was set to kick off at 3 (it was a little postponed due to the 49ers playoff game), so it was nice to make use of the early afternoon light before the guests arrived. It was halftime at 2, so the boys were more than willing to pose for photos. When I approached Jeffery for the first time, instead of turning to greet me, he turned away and wouldn't look at me, hence me laughing in the fourth photo. Seeing him calmed my nerves immediately, and from that point on I was really excited.

Travis masterfully captured our emotions leading up to the big moment. I was so anxious it was difficult to smile. I had a meltdown getting my hair done (thankfully my only one), decided to just wear it down (so glad I did), and I hadn't seen my mom for hours because she was preoccupied with the cake. There are plenty of beautiful photos of ugly expressions that I'm not brave enough to share. Later on, the smiles came easily.
